64K → AI

From 64K to AI

64K to AI — the discipline of constraint, the possibility of intelligence

Forty years of technology.
Two directions of travel.

An experimental platform exploring how computing moved from severe constraint to generative abundance—and what each era can teach the other.

Explore the journey

Direction of travel: 64K → AI

Not nostalgia.
Not AI hype.
A working comparison between constraint and abundance.

Early computing had almost no room for waste. Contemporary AI appears to offer almost no limit to output. 64K → AI examines what was gained across that journey, what may have been lost, and whether technological abundance always produces better work.

The journey

64K → AI

Travelling forward: from severe technical limitation toward generative abundance.

  1. 01

    Constraint

Every byte, frame and instruction had to earn its place.

  2. 02

    Craft

Limitations demanded judgement, compression and ingenuity.

  3. 03

    Abundance

Computing power, content and possibility expanded dramatically.

  4. 04

    Intelligence

Software can now participate in the creation of software.

The two questions

64K → AI

What can today's technology finally make possible?

This direction starts with the ambitions of early computing and asks how modern processing, simulation, connectivity and AI can deepen them without replacing their original clarity.

  • Deepen, don't decorate
  • Realise the original intent
  • Use power with purpose

AI → 64K

What can artificial intelligence relearn from limitation?

This direction takes contemporary abundance and deliberately subjects it to older disciplines: smaller systems, fewer elements, visible rules, economical code and meaningful human decisions.

  • Remove the excess
  • Make every element earn its place
  • Restore human judgement

As capability expanded, natural constraints receded.

The design response

Artificial Constraint

In the 64K era, constraint was imposed by the machine.

In the AI era, useful constraint must be designed by the human.

Artificial Constraint is the deliberate introduction of limits where technological limits have disappeared. It asks what should be restricted, reduced, slowed or retained in order to preserve clarity, judgement and meaningful human capability.

  • Design the limit

    What boundary should be introduced?

  • Name what it preserves

Which capability, value or form of judgement must survive?

  • Test the result

Does the constraint create greater depth, clarity and human authority?

A constraint is justified not by what it prevents, but by what it preserves.

The experimental method

  1. 01

    Recover the intent

Identify what an early system was genuinely trying to achieve beneath its technical limitations.

  2. 02

    Rebuild with current capability

Use contemporary tools—including AI—to pursue that intention with greater depth, responsiveness and realism.

  3. 03

    Reapply constraint

Remove unnecessary features, spectacle and output until only the essential experience remains.

  4. 04

    Document the difference

Record development time, human decisions, AI contributions, computational complexity, clarity and experiential value.

More technology should create greater depth—not merely more content.

What 64K2AI examines

Computational power
What became possible?
Human craft
What became easier, and what became less visible?
Design discipline
Did technical freedom reduce the need to choose carefully?
Artificial intelligence
Are we programming machines, directing machines, or collaborating with them?
Experience
Does a larger system create a more meaningful experience?
Efficiency
How much technology is required to produce how much value?

Core manifesto

64K was not merely a memory limit.

It was a demand for judgement.

AI is not merely greater computing power.

It is a new relationship with computation.

The journey between them is not a story of old technology becoming obsolete.

It is a question of what should survive.

The discipline of constraint.
The possibility of intelligence.

64K → AI

The first experiment

From The Way of the Exploding Fist
to Kung Fu Works

The first computer game I remember being genuinely excited to play was The Way of the Exploding Fist on my Commodore 64.

It was simple because it had to be.

But its ambition was serious: make martial arts feel as real as the machine allowed.

1985

Pixel constraint

2026

Simulated depth

Use modern capability to realise the original intent.

Kung Fu Works

A 64K → AI experiment

The Way of the Exploding Fist pursued realism within limits imposed by its machine. Kung Fu Works begins by choosing its own limits—and then uses contemporary simulation and AI to deepen everything inside them.

Design the constraint.

Use AI to deepen what remains.

The constraints we design

  • One opponent.
  • One fighting space.
  • A limited and intelligible technique set.
  • No supernatural powers.
  • No fireballs or electricity.
  • No unnecessary arsenal.
  • No endless combination systems.
  • No feature without purpose.
  • Every movement must earn its place.

What AI can deepen

  • Movement and recovery.
  • Distance and timing.
  • Balance and weight transfer.
  • Physical consequence.
  • Opponent perception and adaptation.
  • Fighting temperament.
  • Pattern recognition and changing tactics.
  • The realism beneath simple controls.

AI may increase the depth of an element.

It may not justify adding an element the experience does not need.

Artificial Constraint is foundational to the experiment.

It defines the game's possibility boundary before development begins. Every proposed feature must answer one question: does this deepen the martial-arts encounter?

If it improves timing, movement, judgement, consequence or physical realism, it may belong inside the boundary. If it merely adds spectacle, scale, variety or content, it remains outside.

Modern capability, deliberately constrained

Adaptive opponents
Use AI to develop perception, temperament and tactical adaptation—not impossible reactions or unfair advantage.
Movement
Use modern animation and simulation to improve transitions within a fixed technique set—not to multiply techniques endlessly.
Physics
Use simulation to deepen balance, weight and impact—not to create destruction or spectacle.
Content
Use AI to refine behaviour and responsiveness—not to generate unlimited arenas, weapons or characters.
Audio
Use sound to communicate breath, movement, distance and contact—not cinematic excess.

What can AI add when the boundaries have already been deliberately designed?

Kung Fu Works tests whether artificial intelligence becomes more valuable—not less—when it is required to operate within meaningful constraint.

The constraints preserve the game.

AI allows the game to become more fully itself.

The Way of the Exploding Fist is referenced as the historical inspiration for this independent experiment. Kung Fu Works is an original project and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the creators or rights holders of the earlier game.
